Ever wondered what it is like to audition for a show? If you have auditioned, have you ever wondered what the judges actually thought or how you might have improved? The Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre Mock Audition Workshop provides both experienced auditioners and those who have never auditioned before with a chance to participate in a mock audition and to receive feedback from our theatre staff about their efforts. The Workshop will provide examples of good and bad auditions, tips on how the audition process works, a basic introduction to the audition process, and the opportunity to try out without worrying about the consequences.
The Workshop will have two parts – a demonstration element and an audition element. There will be audition and dance demonstrations, as well as an opportunity for each participant to audition. To prepare, each participant should prepare 16 bars of a song and a monologue (speech, story, poem) no longer than 60 seconds. Be sure to come ready to dance, ready to sing and ready to act! (and don’t forget your music - a piano part or CD is requested – no recorded voices, please).
There will be an independent judge (will not be a judge for “Willy Wonka”) who will provide feedback to each participant. So start working on your monologue and song, receive some good feedback this Thursday, and then attend the auditions for TCT’s production of “Willy Wonka” on Thursday and Friday, February 2 & 3 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Academy.
Mock Audition Info
When: January 26, 2012 starting at 5 p.m. and finishing around 8 p.m.
Where: First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL
We look forward to seeing you at the Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre Mock Audition Workshop!

Update on Labels for Education!!!!! We have gotten information that the bonus collection sheet that was supposed to be in the January 9th newspaper was not made available to all markets despite heavy advertising from Labels for Education. In its absence, they are allowing each school to submit 50 sheets that have been made available to us. What we are asking you to do is to submit any Label for Education UPC labels that you have saved to the PTA office no later than February 28th and we will compile them on the authorized sheets for our maximum allowable bonus. If we turn in all 50, this will give us a 5000 bonus which is HUGE! If you have not been on the Labels for Education web site, you should sign up as a supporter for our school and you can see some of the things we can purchase for the school. We are well on our way to making a big contribution to TMSE and appreciate all the each of you do to help!

Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre Willy Wonka Audition Information
If this is your first time to audition for a show, you may want to attend the Mock Audition workshop on Thursday January 26 at First Presbyterian Church (900 Greensboro Avenue). Mock auditions begin at 5:00 pm.
The Mock Audition Workshop is an opportunity for aspiring actors/actresses to have the audition process explained to them by an older TCT actor/actress or TCT alumni. They will have the chance to present his/her monologue (no longer than a minute) and sing his/her song (sheet music or CD (instrumental only) no longer than a minute) as they would in a normal audition. A short dance segment will also be taught. Following the mock audition, feedback will be given to assist in improving his/her audition. The Director for the Willy Wonka production will not be a part of the mock audition process.
The auditions for Willy Wonka will be on Thursday February 2 and Friday February 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Tuscaloosa Academy.
Students will need to have a monologue prepared lasting no longer than one minute and a song with sheet music in the proper key or musical CD accompaniment (instrumental only). (No acappella songs, please.) Please note that monologues should not exceed one minute and that songs will also be greatly limited in length. To accommodate the number of actors auditioning, longer songs and monologues will be cut off, and auditioning actors should not be concerned if they are cut off by the director.

There has been a lot of confusion for parents and students with regards to gift-giving to teachers this year because of the new Alabama Ethics Law. The state’s Ethics Commission issued an opinion on this recently, which has led to our school board instating policy GAJ (Use of Office for Personal Gains or Gifts to Personnel), approved last night.
The succinct overview of gift giving is as follows:
- Gifts provided to employees must be of “de minimis” value (see examples from the opinion issued by the Ethics Commission and those provided in Policy GAJ). There is no dollar value assigned to “de minimis” in the law, opinion, or policy.
- Donations that are “de minimis” in value can be pooled together to provide a gift or gift card for a teacher or support employee (see section C of Policy GAJ).
An example would be 18 Kindergarten students provide a “de minimis” contribution together to purchase a gift for their teacher. The approved policy permits this.
For more information, see the advisory opinion
here, the approved Tuscaloosa City School Board policy
here, and the Tuscaloosa City Schools website on Gifting
here.
